CQC Dental Practice Risk Assessment

Are You Managing Your Waterlines Safely in 2025?

Legionella remains one of the most overlooked but potentially serious compliance risks in dental practices. This year, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has updated its guidance. Placing a sharper focus on dental unit waterline (DUWL) safety. It has been made clear that practices must take proactive steps to remain inspection ready.

If you’ve ever assumed that a quick flush and monthly checkboxes are enough, this article is for you.

What’s Changed from the CQC In 2025?

The CQC’s refreshed guidance, as outlined in Mythbuster 5. Reaffirms that Legionella risk in dental waterlines is not theoretical, it’s a genuine health risk. This must be managed under HTM 01-05, ACOP L8, and the Health and Safety at Work Act.

Key updates include:

More emphasis on anti-retraction valves: These are essential to prevent suck-back of oral fluids into the waterline.

Greater scrutiny of water quality testing: Verbal reassurance isn't enough. Inspectors want documented results.

Clarity around responsibility: Providers are responsible for risk assessment and control. Whether that be NHS or private.

What Inspectors Want to See

To meet the required standard, your dental practice must be able to demonstrate the following:

·        An up-to-date Legionella Risk Assessment, ideally renewed every 2 years.

·        Evidence of regular flushing, cleaning, and disinfection of DUWLs.

·        Installation of anti-retraction valves, where needed.

·        Regular water quality testing (dip slides or lab samples).

·        A named responsible person for legionella control.

·        Training and awareness for relevant staff.

FAQ’s

Do I Need a Separate Legionella Risk Assessment for My Practice?

Yes. Any premises with a water system, including dental chairs, must have a formal Legionella Risk Assessment. This is a legal requirement, not optional guidance.

Many dental practices assume the landlord's assessment covers them, it usually doesn't.

What Happens If You’re Not Compliant?

Non-compliance can lead to a failed CQC inspection, enforcement action, or even patient safety risks. The consequences are more than administrative; they can damage your practice’s reputation and bottom line.
